THE US GREEN CARD LOTTERY

Each year, the US government grants 50,000 Green Cards to people born in countries with historically low levels of immigration. The distribution process is done by a random lottery draw. Take a look at how it works and what you need to do to enter the lottery:

 

Things you need to know

  • 1Only people born in countries with a low immigration rate are allowed to participate.
  • 2The US Department of State decides which countries are eligible to take part in the lottery. The list of countries changes from year to year.
  • 3More than 22.4 million applicants qualified and applied for the Diversity Visa (DV) in 2017.

To qualify for the program, you must

  • Have been born in one of the eligible countries 1
  • Have finished high school with a degree or have 2 years’ work experience within the last 5 years 2
  • Have a clean criminal record. 3

The chance of your winning depends on the number of applications and cannot be determined prior to each program.
